Video Game Genres

Much like all forms of entertainment (movies, books, music, etc.), video games now fall into specific genres based on what they feature in-game as well as how the game itself plays out. These genres are forever evolving based on the games that are released; so do expect this list to constantly be updated when new genres are found or appropriate adjustments out to be made. See below for a breakdown of the different genres.

Action/Adventure
  • This game is identified by its action-based tone of gameplay that focuses on one or more characters being faced with a challenge and going on an adventure to solve it through puzzle solving, avoiding obstacles, and battling enemies with multiple forms of weapons and attacks.
Action/Adventure Platformer
  • This game is identified by its action-based tone of gameplay that focuses on one or more characters being faced with a challenge and going on an adventure to solve it. As a "platformer", this title is characterized by the character having to traverse a complex obstacle course consisting of deadly pits and high cliffs that they must reach. 
Action/Adventure Role-Playing Game 
  • As an Action/Adventure title, players will adventure and fight their way through the world while also finding alternate means of completing their tasks including battles, negotiation, and puzzle solving. Likewise, as a role-playing game, players will are able to create and develop their own unique character based on the decisions they make.
Creative Platformer 
  • Players then have the ability to manipulate everything in that world in order to create anything that their heart desires. The character operates on a mostly two-dimensional environment, i.e. restrained to up, down, left, and right; in which they most often will run to the right-side of the screen and avoid obstacles and solve puzzles in order to get to the completion of the level/game.
Fighting 
  • This game features a number of different characters, most often with certain special powers, fighting back and forth against each other in an attempt to figure out who is more powerful.
First Person Shooter
  • This game is characterized by the viewpoint and weapons used in the title. In a first person shooter, you are looking down the barrel of a gun as though you yourself are holding the weapon. Likewise, as the term "shooter" implies, the game specifically uses guns and firearms.
First-Person Shooter / Open World RPG
  •  The name makes this form of game sound more complicated than it really is. These games are characterized by the viewpoint and weapons used in the title. In a first person shooter, you are looking down the barrel of a gun as though you yourself are holding the weapon. Likewise, as the term "shooter" implies, the game specifically uses guns and firearms. On top of this, in an Open World RPG, players explore a place where choice is everything. Rather than providing a set story that a player has to follow, they are provided a world that they can explore. Finally, RPG means "Role Playing Game" and is characterized by the ability for a player to customize the appearance, weaponry, and special skills and abilities that are available to a character that they are playing. 
First-Person Shooter/Puzzler 
  • These games are characterized by the viewpoint and weapons used in the title. In a first person shooter, you are looking down the barrel of a gun as though you yourself are holding the weapon. However, unlike other shooters, this game is focused on puzzles rather than warfare and combat.

Open World Action/Adventure
  • This game takes place where choice is everything. Rather than providing a set story that a player has to follow, they are provided a world that they can explore and do as they wish with a focus similar to an action movie. Likewise, as players adventure through this title they will find alternate means of completing their tasks including battles, negotiation, and puzzle solving.
Open World Action/Adventure RPG
  • This game takes place where choice is everything. Rather than providing a set story that a player has to follow, they are provided a world that they can explore and do as they wish with a focus similar to an action movie. Likewise, as players adventure through this title they will find alternate means of completing their tasks including battles, negotiation, and puzzle solving. Finally, players are able to create and developer their own unique character based on the decisions they make. 
Open-World Creative
  • This game is identified by players having the ability to truly go anywhere and do anything in a massive open world. Players then have the ability to manipulate everything in that world in order to create anything that their heart desires.
Open-World Crime Drama 
  • As an open-world title, this game emphasizes a player's ability to go anywhere and do anything at anytime they so choose; allowing them to simply follow the story or explore a fully realized world that is filled with characters and locations. Likewise, as a crime-drama, this title follows the investigations, inquiries, and mysteries attached to being a police officer.
Open-World Survival Horror
  • This game takes place in a world where choice is everything. Rather than providing a set story that a player has to follow, they are provided a world that they can explore and do as they wish. This game features a focus on horror themes and attempting to escape the terror that has overtaken the situation. This game may contain situations that are scary for some players.
Racing Simulator 
  • This game is characterized by the focus on racecar driving. Players will pilot a wide variety of different cars of all makes and models with a heavy focus on beating other vehicles in closed-track races. Street racing is not endorsed.
Survival Horror
  • This game features a focus on horror themes and attempting to escape the terror that has overtaken the situation. This game may contain situations that are scary for some players and scenes of intense blood and gore.
Two-Dimensional Platformer
  • This game is identified by its play-style. The character operates on a mostly two-dimensional environment, i.e. restrained to up, down, left, and right; in which they most often will run to the right-side of the screen and avoid obstacles and solve puzzles in order to get to the completion of the level/game.
