- This term refers to the absolute victory over or defeat of an opponent in a video game. While originally the word referred to someone's complete defeat, like a "Shut-out" game from American Football, it is now commonly accepted as simply describing the defeat of one's opponent(s).
- The improper spelling (pwned rather than owned) comes from PC/Home Computer players who, in the throws of victory, would generally miss the "O" on the Keyboard; instead hitting the "P". While originally a simple spelling error, it occurred often enough that players simply began using this term instead.
